He's probably more important as a cultural touchstone than for his music.

Nothing wrong with that, of course. I hear a lot more musical influence from his contemporaries (Cash, Perkins, Holly) in rockabilly, alt, country, etc. Maybe that's because (since he's such a bloated figure culturally speaking) he's a bit of a guilty pleasure for many?

He might have been the first, or even the best, but his impact is by far the greatest--evidenced by the fact that over 30 years after his death we're still talking about him.
