The Jam: In The Crowd

[purchase]

The Jam are one of the great rock bands of the 1970s/1980s, but you don't hear much about them anymore. Too bad. Maybe they'll have a resurgence like The Kinks?

Speaking of The Kinks, the section of this song from 0:45 to 0:55 (and repeated later) really reminds me of a Kinks song, but I can't place which one it is. Am I making this up? Or do you know what song I'm thinking of? Help me out Kinks fans...

The Jam has to be one of the greatest bands to ever emerge from the punk/new wave detritus of the late '70s early '80s. Yeah, they stole from the Kinks, but then so did the Who. They did it and they did it well. And they were even preachy about it.

Great song from a near perfect album. Did you know The Jam - minus Weller - is currently touring the States btw? What a disgrace.

I can't identify the Kinks song, but the part you reference does sound Kink-y.

Theft, or appropriation, or whatever you want to call it, is one of the great engines of creativity in music. There's a gray area or fine line between a good theft and just a ripoff, I suppose.

No, no, no, don't get me wrong - stealing, appropriation, whatever you want to call it can be a wonderful thing from one generation to the next.
